If we asked you to write a list of recent movies which don’t need a sequel, Source Code would probably be on it, right? Well, development has begun ramping up on the follow-up to the original movie which was directed by Duncan Jones (Moon), and starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan and Jeffrey Wright.

Cinematographer Anna Foerster (who has directed TV shows like Criminal Minds and Outlander) has signed on to direct Source Code 2, while the last instalment’s writer Ben Ripley is set to return to pen the script.

The Mark Gordon Company and Vendome Pictures are set to produce, but a distributor has not yet been found. A cast also isn’t place as of right now, but it’s extremely unlikely anyone from the original will return.

So, why release a sequel? Source Code did rather well at the box office back in 2011, earning $54 million in North America and over $147 million worldwide. That was on a budget of only $30 million, so they clearly believe that there’s room to expand the franchise and potentially make more money on the back of the first.

There’s no mention of Jones’ involvement, but he’s busy with the big budget World of Warcraft adaptation.

There’s no word on the direction that this sequel will take, but whether or not it can recapture the success of Source Code remains to be seen. Be sure to stay tuned for details on this one, but hopefully not on Moon 2…
