MGM+ has pulled back the curtain on its upcoming thriller ‘American Hostage,’ unveiling a gripping set of first-look images that hint at a powder-keg drama steeped in paranoia, pressure, and the crackling tension of live radio.

Front and centre is Jon Hamm, stepping into the role of Fred Heckman, a respected Indianapolis radio reporter who finds himself navigating a nightmare scenario that spirals far beyond journalism. The series, set in the turbulent 1970s, transforms a real-life hostage crisis into a tightly wound psychological duel played out over the airwaves.

Based on the acclaimed scripted podcast of the same name, ‘American Hostage’ chronicles the true story of Heckman’s collision with Tony Kiritsis, a volatile hostage-taker demanding a platform on live radio. What follows is less an interview and more a high-stakes chess match, where every word could tip the balance between survival and catastrophe.

The ensemble surrounding Hamm includes Giovanni Ribisi, who embodies Kiritsis, Mireille Enos, who portrays Barbara Heckman, grounding the chaos with emotional weight, while Kristoffer Polaha and William Jackson Harper round out the core cast as key figures caught in the unfolding crisis.

Recurring players include Jonathan Tucker as an FBI agent navigating the razor’s edge of negotiation, and Kat Cunning in a supporting role that hints at deeper personal stakes. The series is co-created and executive-produced by Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers.
