Alfonso Cueron

After making what many consider to be the best of the eight Harry Potter movies with The Prisoner of Azkaban, it perhaps shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to learn that Academy Award winning director Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity) is now being courted by Warner Bros. to helm their planned spin-off.

That spin-off will be set years before the events of the Harry Potter series, and is based on a small encyclopaedia J.K. Rowling released for charity quite a few years back. It’s called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them, and Rowling is also writing the screenplay.

It’s not expected to directly tie directly into the Potter movies though.

Fantastic Beast would reunite Cuaron with Harry Potter and Gravity producer David Heyman for what has previously been described as an “extension of the wizarding world”. The lead character will be Newt Scamander, although there’s currently no word on who Warner Bros. are eying for that role.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set to be released on November 18th, 2016, meaning that filming will likely begin next year. It could also mean that it will be a while until we hear anything official on a director or cast, but be sure to stay tuned to HeyUGuys for all the latest updates!
