Hugh Dancy, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jonathan Pryce are joined by Felicity Jones whose star is firmly in the ascendant following a couple of choice roles with Niall MacCormick’s Albatross and long-distance love fest Like Crazy. Oh, and Rupert Everett’s in it which means it’ll be great.
Gyllenhaal spoke about her role in 2010,
In Hysteria I play a firecracker whose father is a doctor who is in the business of curing hysterical women. He cures them basically by getting them off and that actually happened. I end up having a sort of unexpected love affair with this guy who works for him, and who by mistake invents the vibrator.
I love the word firecracker. It’s up there with jackass for archaic words I can’t get enough of.
Prepare yourself for a knee-trembler of a synopsis,
London, 1880. Mortimer Granville, a dedicated and forward-thinking young doctor, is struggling to establish his career. While Granville preaches sanitation and germ theory, the old guard of doctors clinging to leeches and hacksaws, scoff at his upstart ideas, and show him the door. Granville’s fortunes change when he arrives for an interview at the well-appointed private offices of Dr. Dalrymple, London’s leading specialist in women’s medicine.
Here the new trailer and an appalling poster which seems to be selling four different films all at once. And I have no idea what that freakish women doll thing is at the bottom of the picture.
