Star Wars Episode VIII was recently delayed from next May until December 15th, but production on the movie has already begun. CEO Bob Iger confirmed the news during the Walt Disney Company’s quarterly earnings call earlier today, mentioning that production was actually supposed to begin last month before news of the release date delay came out.

“Filming of Star Wars: Episode VIII, the next chapter of the legendary saga, has just commenced and it will be in theaters December 2017,” he said. “And production of Episode IX, a 2019 release, has also begun.” That’s definitely a surprise, though he’s probably just referring to the fact that Colin Trevorrow is entering the very early stages of planning.

Everything we know about Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII

Iger then went on to comment on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the upcoming Anthology movie which is being directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla). Set before the events of A New Hope, it follows a group of Rebels who set out to steal the plans of the first Death Star. “Filming of Rogue One is virtually completed and we absolutely love what we’ve seen so far.”

Perhaps the biggest surprise to come out of this call was the fact that the plan is to still release the Han Solo movie in May 2018. It seems Episode VIII release date change was more out of necessity than a sign that Disney would be slotting in Star Wars movies into December for the foreseeable future. Of course, things could always change as time passes!
