Robert Downey Jr. signed a multi-million dollar contract to return as Tony Stark in Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Avengers 3, but with Iron Man 3 the only Marvel Studios solo movie to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, fans have been sitting back and waiting for confirmation of a fourth Iron Man movie.

The actor has played coy over recent months, sometimes dropping hints that it will happen and other times stating that as of right now he has no intentions to play the character again outside of the Avengers movies.

In an interview in American talk show ellen earlier today, Downey Jr. (who will next be seen in The Judge) confirmed that negotiations are currently taking place for him to reprise the role in an Iron Man 4.

“I know there’s going to be more Marvel movies, and they have big ideas of how to do it best,” he teased, before adding: “We’re in the middle of negotiations, blah blah blah.” When pushed for details, he simply replied, “Ok, yes,” confirming that a fourth Iron Man movie is in development and that he will return.

Further confirmation of sorts came from his reddit AMA earlier today when he told one fan, “Sooner than later the Marvel Roster will be made public and all questions will be answered.” Is confirmation coming?

It seems likely. The actor wants to start pursuing non-superhero projects, but with The Judge receiving a tepid response and a third Sherlock Holmes in limbo, another Iron Man movie with a massive payday for the actor seems like a sensible move. How do you feel about the possibility of a fourth instalment?
