Pacific-Rim-PosterGuillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is finally hitting the multiplex this weekend, and after months and months of being promoted around the globe, I’m very much looking forward to seeing how it performs at the box office.

Jon recently caught an early screening of the film – you can read our review here – and was more impressed by the effects than the story. But that still doesn’t change the fact that I’m looking forward to its arrival.

And with just days left on the clock, a new extended featurette has surfaced over on Apple.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Idris Elba lead a fine cast, starring alongside Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman.

Del Toro is directing from a script he co-wrote with Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans). And with talk of Pacific Rim 2 already on the cards, it really will be interesting to see how things go over the coming weekend.

Pacific Rim will be hitting in 3D and IMAX 3D on Friday, July 12th, in the US and UK. Here’s the latest featurette (which you can watch in HD over on Apple) to help get you into a cinema seat, in case you need any more persuading.
