Johnny Depp has spent most of 2016 in the tabloids, but things are now looking up for the actor as he’s signed on to co-star in the already confirmed Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel. David Yates is going to return to direct that, while Eddie Redmayne will obviously reprise he role of Newt Scamander. Who though is Depp going to end up playing?

As of right now, we don’t actually know! Deadline reveals that he will likely have a small cameo in the first Fantastic Beasts movie which is obviously set to be released later this month, but you have to believe that he’ll end up playing a key role in the new franchise.

Speculation is actually already running rampant that he might be a young Albus Dumbledore, though equally as many Harry Potter fans think there’s a chance he’s playing Gellert Grindelwald, an evil dark wizard tied to both the Hogwarts headmaster and Lord Voldemort.

We’ll just have to wait and see, but with the Fantastic Beasts franchise set to span five films, it’s thought that it could end up tying into the Potter franchise in a bigger way than initially expected. Depp is a solid bit of casting for the movie anyway, though here’s hoping he delivers something a little different to the quirky performances we’ve grown used to.
