Sinister was one of 2012’s best horror movies, and a sequel was given the green light following the first’s success at the box office (it grossed over $87 million worldwide on a budget of only $3 million).

Original director Scott Derickson won’t be back behind the camera – he’s a little too busy developing Doctor Strange for Marvel – but he did find the time to reteam with C. Robert Cargill to pen the sequel. Citadel director Ciaran Foy will helm the sequel, and based on that movie, it’s fair to say the franchise is in good hands.

Sinister 2 starts shooting in Chicago next week, and  Shannyn Sossamon (Mistresses) has been cast as the film’s lead. Joining her in a much larger role this time will be James Ransone. He returns as the unnamed deputy from the first movie who actually played a pretty major role in proceedings last time around.

Robert and Dartanian Sloan will be portraying Sossamon’s twin sons in the movie.

In the aftermath of the shocking events in Sinister, a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon of Wayward Pines) and her 9-year-old twin sons (real-life twins Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves in a rural house marked for death. James Ransone, who portrayed the concerned sheriff’s deputy in Sinister, will be reprising his character in Sinister 2.

Sinister was a chilling movie which saw a true crime writer move his family into a house where a horrific crime previously took place. It’s not long before a supernatural entity known as Bughuul is revealed as the culprit, so it should be interesting to see how they flesh that out in the sequel. Whether any of the other surviving cast members will return remains to be seen, though it would be great to see Vincent D’Onofrio back.

Sinister 2 is currently set to be released on August 21st, 2015.
