As Sons of Anarchy enters its seventh and final season, star Charlie Hunnam continues to look towards the big screen to put himself on the map as a leading actor in Hollywood. After being courted for the role of Christian Grey in 50 Shades of Grey, the Pacific Rim star is now being eyed to lead a very different project.

According to Deadline, Hunnam is Guy Ritchie’s top choice to play King Arthur in the Warner Bros. movie which is being developed by Joby Harold as a franchise which could be made up of as many as six movies. Harold penned the movie and Akiva Goldsman is set to produce. Hunnam meanwhile is in final negotiations for the role.

King Arthur is a project which has gone through a number of iterations, with Games of Thrones star Kit Harington at one point attached to play Arthur and The Killing’s Joel Kinnaman in line for Lancelot. Before that, Colin Farrell was attached for the lead, with Gary Oldman set as Merlin. X-Men: Days of Future Past helmer Bryan Singer planned to helm a version called Excalibur at one point too. None of these projects took off.

This take on King Arthur does look like it WILL happen though, and the site also mentions that Luther and Thor star Idris Elba is being eyed for the role of Merlin. Meanwhile, Variety adds that Elizabeth Olsen (Godzilla) is the frontrunner for the lead female character. There’s a lot to like about this latest version so far!
