The Transformers franchise is the latest to get the shared universe treatment as Paramount Pictures is said to be in talks with Akiva Goldsman to join Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura to put together a “writer’s room” which will develop ideas for a new series of Transformers movies and spinoffs.

Whether you like the movies or not, the movies are a hit, with Transformers: Age of Extinction earning over $1 billion worldwide in 2014 to become the year’s highest grossing release. Goldsman apparently isn’t necessarily going to write any of these new projects, but will come up with ideas for writers to develop.

Michael Bay claims he won’t direct the fifth Transformers movie, but there has been talks of another trilogy of movies which will likely bring back Mark Wahlberg as the lead of the franchise. Spinoffs however will obviously create a shared universe which expands the series in a major way; movies set on Cybertron would be a good way to accomplish that, but could moviegoers get sick of seeing these robots in battle?

Regardless of what the critics say, the box office performance of the Transformers movies indicates that they aren’t! For those keen on seeing more high octane action as the Autobots battle the Decepticons, the next few years are going to be exciting, that’s for sure! Perhaps they could team-up with the G.I. Joe franchise?
