Batman and Superman have teamed up on numerous occasions in both comics (the most recent Superman/Batman comic series ran from 2003-2011 and another series is in the works) and animation. The two heroes work well together, and DC knows it.
Having an established Batman/Superman relationship before the events of an ensemble film – similar to what was depicted in the DC animated universe – allows time for this important relationship to blossom unimpeded by the burden of also having to introduce other characters in a 2 hour film.
