To mark the release of All Quiet on The Western Front on 28th March, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on DVD.

The plot follows a group of young German recruits in World War 1 through their passage from idealism to disillusionment. As the central character Paul Baumer (Lew Ayres) declares, “we live in the trenches and we fight, we try not to be killed – that’s all”.

Written in 1927, and based on Remarque’s own experience of war, the novel sold 1.5 million copies, in the year following it’s publication, in time being translated into 29 languages. Made for the then considerable sum of .25 million, the production utilized over 2,000 extras – mainly ex German WW1 soldiers living in LA. Production began only a few months after the 1929 stock market crash, putting into perspective the enormous gamble taken by Universal Pictures. It paid off, winning Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director and was nominated for Best Writing and Best Cinematography.
