We have an interesting rumour for you here about the third Avengers movie, though depending on how well you trust the source’s ability to read body language, you may want to take it with a pinch of salt for the time being! Badass Digest claims to have heard some behind-the-scenes rumblings that Joss Whedon won’t be back for the follow-up to next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. If that’s the case, who would be a worthy replacement?

Well, they recently spoke with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, and asked him during an interview how far into negotiations with Kevin Feige he is to helm Avengers 3. Here’s what happened next:

“I have seen James Gunn in social settings and in press settings, and at this moment I saw James Gunn in one way I had never before seen him: speechless. He kind of sat there gobsmacked for a second. And then he said, “It was great seeing you!” as our interview time was up. The next day I talked to Kevin Feige, and I straight up asked him: will James Gunn direct Avengers 3? Feige denied it. That leaves me with one no comment and one denial.”

It’s a stretch, but something which would also make a lot of sense. Rumour and speculation points to the third Avengers movie being a team-up between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to battle Thanos together, so enlisting Gunn to tackle this movie would make quite a bit of sense. For now though, it’s all speculation, and it would be surprising for Gunn not to comment on this soon.

In some slightly more definite Marvel news, it has been revealed by TV Guide that Lucy Lawless will be joining the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in an unspecified role. Lawless is best known for starring in Xena: Warrior Princess, and seeing which role she will take on (an established character or otherwise) should be very interesting.

We’ll likely hear more about all of this at Marvel’s film and television panels at this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con! For now, share your thoughts on this news in the comments section below.
