Rogue One

9. A Promising Director

It is hard to believe that Rogue One will serve as only Edwards’ third picture. He gained widespread critical acclaim for his work on 2010’s Monsters in which he served in virtually every major technical and creative role, and again as director of 2014 monster revitalisation Godzilla.

What is so interesting about this auteur is the independent mindset he brings to sprawling blockbuster filmmaking. Godzilla was a significantly tonal picture; one which maintained a deft understanding of ambience and atmosphere, and favoured as such over complex visual effects.

Whilst his Star Wars film will be laden with dazzling imagery, we know that a large percentage of it will be practical to keep in-trend with the saga’s legacy. Edwards has an immaculate eye for composition, and enables his actors to really colour the frame with their personalities. Such a prospect is most welcomed.
