Watch – Tim Minchin Posts Cut ‘Woody Allen Jesus’ Video + My Thoughts

3

Yesterday, news broke that the  ITV’s Director of Television, Peter Fincham, has decided to cut the Tim Minchin performance on the Jonathan Ross Show Christmas Special for fear of causing offence to religious groups – specifically Christians. Well, I’m a Christian and found myself laughing through the video from start to finish. I can understand why ITV pulled it for fear of various Ofcom investigations that would no doubt have undergone if the song had been run but we see far worse normally don’t we?

My faith is very important to me and to be honest, I’m so used to people taking the mickey out of it that it’s water off a ducks back. Tim Minchin is a very very talented comedy song writer and used this talent to write something both topical and funny. I think the fact that he actually relates Christmas to Jesus is actually a compliment as Christmas to most people who celebrate it has nothing to do with the nativity story whatsoever but is just a time to have some time off work, get drunk and see families while spending money on presents they cannot afford.

Bottom line, this didn’t offend me at all but what does is hearing people say ‘Oh my God’ on television repeatedly. It does my head in where as this just made me laugh. These are just my own thoughts and do not express the opinion of anyone else on this site but…. I would love to know what you think!

Are you a Christian, did this offend you? If you’re not a Christian, do you think it should still have been cut? Please let me know in the comments below.

  1. I can see why this may seem offensive to some if unaware of the work of Tim Minchin, however it really needs to be considered within the context of his entire repertoire of material. I am non commited on the whole religion thing and am married to a practicing Catholic, but we both share a LOVE of Tim Minchin and have been lucky enough to see him live, where he points out that he actually has a deep respect for followers of Christianity and his rants are purely opinion set to spark question not offense. Its an arguement as old as the hills, but I say we are all free thinking individuals and to sometimes have someone challenge you isnt always bad….if you dont like it your TV has an off button!

  2. It’s interesting when you say you’re more angered when the lord’s name is used flippantly in normal culture and the media. I’m not religious so I never thought about like that.

  3. never offended me, I wouldn’t at all be surprise if Jesus was listening to it probably through heavens own twitter listening out for mentions of his name, he never cursed used profanity.I get more offended when so called ‘Christians’ that my religion Catholicism is not Christian religion
