It was a favourite of the festival circuit and then a surprise Oscar contender, now Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild is out on Blu-ray and DVD. It’s a film we loved and one we’re happy to see get a wider audience, so if you’ve not caught up with the pre-Oscar bandwagon please do, you’ll be utterly charmed by Zeitlin’s film.
Star (and now Oscar-nominated actress) Quvenzhané Wallis and Behn Zeitlin stopped by at BAFTA HQ recently for a post screening Q&A session, one of many stopovers on the worldwide promotional tour for the film, and there is the sense that few people, Wallis and Zeitlin included, expected the spell of Beasts of the Southern Wild to be cast so wide.
The Oscar nomination certainly affords Beasts a larger audience but it is the furious word of mouth which carries it forward. The responses to the festival screenings have been almost overwhelming in their praise for the film and this BAFTA Q&A is a great way to catch up with the film, so far on now from it’s premiere, to discover the journey so far and what’s next for the creators.
