Glasgow Film Festival 2026 announces its closing film as California Schemin’ in what is James McAvoy’s directorial debut.
The 22nd edition of GFF kicks off on February 25th and runs until March 8th, in a festival famous for its variety and special events.
Glasgow-born James McAvoy in his acting career has established himself as a leading man in Hollywood but now steps behind the camera. Shot in locations across Scotland including Glasgow and Dundee, California Schemin’ tells the story of Silibil N’ Brains.
McAvoy, who was awarded the Cinema City Honorary Award at last year’s festival, said: “California Schemin’ is an unbelievable true story about identity, ambition, fame and how much you’re willing to sacrifice to get it. It’s a wild story and I can’t wait to share the film with festival audiences in March. We made our film in Glasgow and Dundee with the support of a phenomenal Scottish cast and crew, so it feels fitting that we bring it back home for its UK premiere.”
Scotland’s flagship film festival also confirmed its Country Focus – “Take a Chance on Me: Swedish Cinema” that will showcase an eclectic array of films from sci-fi Egghead Republic to horror The Home.
“Truth to Power” is the popular free retrospective that will feature titles such as Ava DuVernay’s Selma, All the President’s Men, Erin Brockovich and Dr Strangelove.
The full programme for GFF26 is set to be announced on January 21st.
