Well it’s that time of year again, couples everywhere are planning big surprises, booking romantic dinners, playing their “love anthems” CDs on a continuous loop – and turning the stomach of normal everyday folk.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not averse to a bit of romance, but like most things, everything in moderation! So for those of you who will be grabbing for the sick buckets this Valentines Day when your colleagues tell you how romantic their night out was… here is the perfect recipe for a perfect night in, my Top 5  Anti-Valentines Day movies!

#5 – American Beauty

What better way to kick off our Anti-Valentines Day movie marathon than with this little gem by Sam Mendes?

Starring Kevin Spacey, Annette Benning and Mena Suvari, American Beauty is the story of Lester Burnahm (Spacey) a depressed, middle aged man supposedly living the American dream.

This film has it all, infatuation, substance abuse, infidelity and all-American voyeurism. It’s everything about suburban America that Valentines Day tries (in vain) to gloss over!

#4 – War of the Roses

Alright so War of the Roses, the 1989 black comedy starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito may be an obvious choice for my number #4 but that makes it no less valid.

What begins as a seemingly idyllic life of love, family and a happy home, quickly deteriorates into all-guns-blazing, hellfire-and-brimstone as Oliver (Douglas) and Barbera (Turner) begin to resent and finally hate one another. It isn’t long before the pair are ritually humiliating each other at every opportunity and you begin to realise that the “little things” eventually lead to all out war in the marital home.

Told through the narrative of the only true winner in marriage (a divorce lawyer), War of the Roses will leave singleton’s out there quite thankful that they’ve never taken that expensive plunge.
