Director Todd Haynes has made one of the finest films of the year with Carol. It’s that simple. For once the histrionics and accusations of Oscar-baiting are feckless grabs for attention, as with his adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt he has committed a sterling examination of the liberation of love.
