Well, this came out of nowhere! The first trailer for Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day: Resurgence has surfaced after airing during a football game in the US, and it finally sheds some light on what has so far been one of 2016’s most mysterious and secretive releases.

In the trailer, we see that Earth has made good use of the technology salvaged from the remains of the last attack on the planet, though it doesn’t appear as if that’s going to be enough to hold off the returning aliens. There’s a lot of CGI here, and it’s hard not to be reminded of the likes of Battleship and Battle: Los Angeles, but hopefully this will be better!

Fox are clearly relying on the nostalgia factor with Independence Day: Resurgence though, hence why Jeff Goldblum is so heavily featured. While Will Smith won’t be back, the cast includes Liam Hemsworth, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward. Here’s the official synopsis:

We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

There was at one time talk of Independence Day 2 being split into two movies, but the plan is to now make just this one film which is set to be released on June 24th, next year. Carter Blanchard rewrote the script which had initially been penned by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, with James Vanderbilt also contributing. The latest draft came from James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright, so it’s clear that finding the right story for the sequel was a challenge!
