A24 has unveiled the second trailer for Benny Safdie’s highly anticipated biographical sports drama ‘The Smashing Machine,’ offering a deeper look into the turbulent personal and professional life of MMA legend Mark Kerr.
Written and directed by Safdie (Good Time, Uncut Gems), the film stars Dwayne Johnson in a transformative role as Kerr, one of the most dominant figures in the early days of the UFC. Emily Blunt co-stars as Dawn Staples, Kerr’s then-wife, whose relationship with the fighter was tested by the intensity of his career and personal struggles.
Set in the year 2000, the trailer teases a gripping portrait of a man torn between glory and self-destruction. We see Kerr’s unstoppable presence inside the cage contrasted with his battles outside of it—addiction, the crushing weight of fame, and the fragile bonds of love and friendship. Johnson’s raw, unvarnished performance marks a striking departure from his blockbuster persona, while Blunt brings emotional depth to a story about loyalty, resilience, and heartbreak.
Safdie, known for his unflinching storytelling, brings his signature intensity to ‘The Smashing Machine’, blending kinetic fight sequences with an intimate, character-driven narrative. The film is produced by Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions, alongside Safdie’s Out for the Count banner, Eli Bush, and David Koplan.
