The Legend Of Korra Bends Itself A Trailer

10

Having largely agreed to disagree when it comes to M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, I can’t help but play devil’s advocate to the newly released trailer for Nickelodeon’s new miniseries spin-off Legend of Korra (via YouTube).

Doing the rounds at this year’s Comic-Con before landing online yesterday, the trailer teases a world set 70 years after the events of the original series. With the water tribe’s Korra discovering that she is the latest Avatar, previous hero Aang now immortalised as a towering statue, she must learn the near-dead art of airbending if she is to protect the four tribes from new antagonist The Revolution, a group of masked chi-blockers looking to rid the world of Korra and her kind.

Whereas The Last Airbender was mocked for it’s dodgy acting and joyless spirit, the new trailer seems to be being lavished praise despite similar flaws. I’m not one to cry hypocrite but what is it about this new miniseries that protects it from such criticism exactly, save from the fact that it is a cartoon rather than live action?

That said, the trailer is indeed impressive, showing off some beautiful animation and hinting at a series of nicely realised set pieces (as you can see from the trailer below). Nevertheless, I remain unconvinced that the franchises somehow belongs off of the big screen.

We will come back with a release date once it has been announced.

  1. The Legend of Korra is a mini series spin-off of Avatar: The Last Airbender the Cartoon series, not a spin off of M. Night Shyamalan’s movie.  In essence most fans hated the movie while still loving the cartoon series, and the new series is being made by original series creators.  M Night has nothing to do with this new thing.

What are you talking about? Similar flaws? You…don’t know what you’re talking about, do you?

  4. I don’t mean to suggest that it is a spin-off from the movie, I know full well that it is based on the original cartoon serial (“set 70 years after the events of the original series”). All I’m saying, and it is only my opinion, is that from this trailer I fail to see how this take on the story is substantially better than Shyamalan’s own, which I rather enjoyed.

  5. Neish , if you can not see the different between the cartoon version and live-movie version of “The Last Airbender”, your opinion of the “Legend of Korra” can not be taken seriously.

Likewise, it is reasonable that those who enjoyed the cartoon version would be hopeful about the new cartoon spinoff considering the new version has the same creative team who created the original.

Most cartoon fans did not like M. Night Shyamalan’s changes to the plot, style, and characterizations that differed from the original cartoon. Had Shyamalan invited the Last Avatar creative team to help him, like the Harry Potter film makers invited the author, the result might have been a classic that all Last Avatar fans could have enjoyed.

But for the me, I could not accept M. Night Shyamalan’s version knowing that the cartoon version was a far better product.

This trailer confirms to me that the new cartoon spinoff will match my expectation of the story telling style that I so enjoyed in the original Last Avatar cartoon.

  6. You cannot compare a trailer of a product (movie, miniseries, or otherwise) to the final product.  I was extremely excited about the M. Night Shyamalan live action movie based on the trailer and “action” footage.  I am equally excited about Legend of Korra based on this trailer.

You said… “Whereas The Last Airbender was mocked for it’s dodgy acting and joyless
spirit, the new trailer seems to be being lavished praise despite
similar flaws.”  Where in the trailer do you get a representation of it’s acting and/or spirit?  You jumped to make a comparison between this new series and the movie, but a comparison is not yet possible based on just seeing the trailer!

Now, I do expect this series to be “substantially better than Shayamalan’s own” based on the fact that I have seen the original series and TRUST Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko to not make a crappy product.  If The Last Airbender 2 movie comes out with M. Night directing, I will watch it with apprehension because he has LOST my trust based on his treatment of the first movie.

I understand you may have liked M. Night’s version.  I would ask if you have watched any of the original series?  If not, do yourself a favor and watch this original work and source material for M. Night’s movie.

You have a right to your opinion, but you are definitely reaching to claim that you can see in this trailer (this PREVIEW of a finished product) any of the same flaws that doomed M. Night’s movie.

    Fail.

  7. You do know there was an original series on Nickelodeon years before M. Night Shyamalan fucked it up right?
