The Hunger Games Podcast – The Book vs. The Trailer: What Do We Know?

5

Lionsgate released a trailer for their new movie, The Hunger Games a couple of weeks ago and to me, it looked pretty good. It showed us some of the storyline which was good for me as I know nothing about The Hunger Games. My wife, Laraine on the other hand has just read the book and hasn’t seen the trailer so while on a journey to Eastbourne last weekend, we decided to record a Podcast talking about what I knew about the movie and without giving anything away, she expands on my knowledge from the trailer and other marketing materials that have been released.

In the Podcast, we discuss the rating that the film should be set at, what people can expect, a little bit more of the story and who certain people are in the trailer. We try and keep it very high level so don’t delve too deep into the storyline. E.g. What do the different trading posters that were released a while ago mean and why do we see them running towards packs in the trailer after they come up through the ground.

This doesn’t really contain any spoilers (specially as I’ve only seen the trailer) but if you don’t want to know anything about the movie, then you might want to stay away from this podcast. After listening to this, we’d love to know what you are looking forward to or have concerns about from the movie. Have you read the book or just seen the trailer? Tell us all on Twitter or in the comments section below.

The Hunger Games is released in the UK 23rd March 2012. Enjoy!

The Hunger Games which stars Jennifer Lawrence?, Josh Hutcherson?, Liam Hemsworth?, Woody Harrelson?, Elizabeth Banks?, Stanley Tucci?, Donald Sutherland?, Wes Bentley?, Toby Jones, Amandla Stenberg, Alexander Ludwig?, Isabelle Fuhrman?, Jacqueline Emerson, Paula Malcomson, Dayo Okeniyi, Jack Quaid, Leven Rambin?, Willow Shields, Lenny Kravitz? and is directed by Gary Ross.

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson?’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collins?’ best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 16 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following.

  1. Nice podcast! It was really fun to listen to you both!
I am very much looking forward to it! I have read the books and thought the trailers were great! I agree with you Dave in hoping it will get a 15 rating. It’d be much better but I’m afraid I think the target audience is just a little younger than that so about 13+ . I am so excited to see Jennifer Lawrence be Katniss! Not too sure about the Hutcherson and Hemsworth as Peeta and Gale, but we’ll see!
Has Laraine seen the trailer yet since you recorded this? I would be interested in knowing what she thought after the trailer!

  3. The gory scene you are talking about, if it the same scene i am thinking about, i think it should be there in the movie. Because the character involved is this tough, brute character but i think what would make that scene is the character telling Katniss to kill them cause of the pain. It a change to that character, begging for death.
I don’t know the rating system in UK, but in Australia, it needs to be M15+ because half the book is about death and the other two books possibly have more especially the third book.

But these books draw you in, i never thought i would be addicted to them as i am now. Purely amazing. I ignore some of the grammatical errors. Trailer looks amazing and seems to look like it will do the book justice
