The First Image of Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher

4

Here’s the first image of Tom Cruise in his new movie, Jack Reacher where he plays the title character. I’ve not heard of it before but it’s based on the novel called One Shot by Lee Child. Cruise is joined by fellow cast-memebers Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Robert Duvall, David Oyelowo in the movie which is set for release early 2013.

A city is thrown into chaos following a shooting that leaves five dead. What at first seems like a simple case to solve becomes complicated when the accused requests that Jack Reacher be put on the case.

Christopher McQuarrie directs the film and this first-look image comes from the lovely chaps at Empire.

  1. Too short for what though? As in what you bring to the adaptation from the book? Is there anything that is key to the character that means he cannot be short?

  2. Wikipedia describes it better than I can:

“Reacher is a giant, standing at 6′ 5″ tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100–115 kg). He has ice-blue eyes and dirty blond hair. He is exceptionally strong. Reacher is strong enough to break a man’s neck with one hand (Bad Luck and Trouble) and kill a villain with a single punch to the head (Running Blind and 61 Hours) or chest (Worth Dying For). In a fight against a 7 foot, 400 lb steroid-using thug (Persuader), Reacher was able to lift his opponent into the air and drop him on his head.”

There was a massive fuss kicked up when he was cast and it just seems like this picture will confirm everyone’s fears (i.e. that he isn’t physically imposing).

  3. There is everything key to the character than means he cannot be short. Reacher’s huge size is iconic and integral to the character. It affects everything, from how he interacts with people (deliberately intimidating bad guys and unintentially scaring the people he is trying to help) to his fighting style (slow because of his bulk, but with incredible brute force.) But it also epitomizes how he just doesn’t fit in with normal society, he was the too big awkward army brat growing up, and now he’s the too big vagrant vet everyone views with fear and suspicion.

Casting Cruise as Reacher is like casting Liam Neeson as Napoleon Bonaparte. His small size affected who he was (they didn’t coin the phrase “Napoleon Complex” for nothing) just as Reacher’s huge size affects who he is.
