Everyone wants to imitate the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and 20th Century Fox are the latest to try with X-Men spinoffs focusing on Deadpool and Gambit. Joining those – and a third and final outing for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine – is The New Mutants, a movie which will focus in a younger team of heroes.

Following the success of The Fault In Our Stars, Josh Boone has been courted for any number of projects, including the long delayed adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand. However, he’s now officially attached to direct this movie which Boone will also co-write alongside Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg will produce.

“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters,” the producer said in a statement today.

It sounds like the project is probably still a good few years away and there are currently no details about which characters the movie will focus on. They probably won’t be any of the X-Men introduced in next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse even though the actors in The New Mutants will be young. After all, it seems more likely that they will now be taking over the X-Men franchise as the contracts of the current cast come to an end.
