The sky is no longer the limit in ‘The Balloonists.’ Distributor Dogwoof has unveiled the official trailer for the exhilarating documentary, charting one of the most audacious aviation challenges of the modern era.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker John Dower, known for his BAFTA-winning work on ‘Lockerbie,’ ‘Thrilla in Manila,’ and ‘My Scientology Movie,’ the film captures a high-stakes race where ambition floats as high as the balloons themselves.

At its heart, ‘The Balloonists’ follows explorer Bertrand Piccard and British flying instructor Brian Jones as they attempt to achieve what many considered impossible: flying nonstop around the world in a hot-air balloon.

Set against the ticking clock of the late 20th century’s final great aviation challenge, the story unfolds during the winter of 1999. Rival teams across the globe prepare for liftoff, each determined to etch their names into the history books. But only one crew can claim victory in this sky-bound marathon.

‘The Balloonists’ first soared onto the global stage at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, where it drew widespread acclaim for its gripping archival footage and emotional storytelling.

Audiences in the UK and Ireland won’t have to wait long to experience the journey for themselves, as the film is set to land in cinemas on 22 May 2026.
