For as long as film has existed movie lovers and critics alike have been trying to keep their eyes out for the next big talent in movie directing.
A talented young director can breathe new life into a studio system bogged down with sequels, spin offs and lazy remakes. The last few years have seen some of the most exciting and innovative new directors making their debut on our screens.
Here we take a look at ten of the most exciting up and coming directors from all around the world. To be considered for this list a director can only have a maximum of two directorial releases to their name.
Richard Ayoade is perhaps best known in England for his part in the hit Channel 4 comedy The IT Crowd, but in the last few years he has demonstrated considerable talent behind the camera.
His debut feature, Submarine released in 2010, was a Wes Anderson-esque story about an outsider growing up in the south of England, falling in love for the first time and dealing with his parents divorce. Ayoade’s first feature was a confident debut and he stamped his distinctive style on the movie from the word go. His follow up movie, The Double, hit cinemas earlier this year to equally positive reviews.
Whilst sticking with a similar approach taken to Submarine The Double was much darker in tone and was clearly inspired by the works of Terry Gilliam.
Ayoade has shown with his first two features that he is one of the freshest and most innovative directors working today and his career will likely go from strength to strength in the coming years.
