Easily one of the best films of last year Prisoners allowed both Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhall to impress with a very tough cautionary tale of taking the law into your own hands. Both actors give raw, layered performances. Their characters are spun through a dark maelstrom of the most unimaginable horrors, exposing their own frailty. Their performances alone make the film a must see.
Here we consider other of this century’s most impressive thrillers, the cinematic dark days and stormy nights.
What makes a film thrilling? Is it the smart plotting, leaving its audience with no clue as to where it might go next and eager to return to it again and again to uncover its secrets? Perhaps it’s the nail-biting tension they create scene-to-scene, or the immersive action sequences that propel the story in addition to being a marvel to look at? The answer, of course, is that a good thriller is any and all of these things, and with this criterion in mind, here are ten of the finest thrillers to have graced our movie screens in the 13 year-old 21st century.
10) Inception (2010)
Christopher Nolan followed up The Dark Knight – the then highest grossing superhero film of all time – with Inception, a mind-bender of a film that was equal parts thriller, sci-fi and heist. Even on repeat watches, it’s a difficult film to completely decipher. Indeed, at one point Ellen Page’s Ariadne remarks that she’s lost track of which subconscious the team are going into. But enough groundwork is laid that even a layman can understand the basics of Nolan’s intricately layered world. When you’re not quite sure what’s going on but you’re eager to see what comes next, you’re clearly on to a winner.
