Netflix has released a new trailer for ‘Steve,’ an evocative and deeply human drama set in the mid-1990s, inspired by Max Porter’s critically acclaimed Sunday Times bestseller Shy. Directed by Tim Mielants (The Responder, Peaky Blinders), the film stars Academy Award® winner Cillian Murphy in a transformative performance as a man battling his inner demons while fighting for the soul of a forgotten school.

Set over the course of a single, pivotal day, Steve follows the headteacher of a last-chance reform school as he faces the looming threat of closure in a society that has abandoned its most vulnerable. As Steve struggles to uphold the integrity of the institution and the young lives it shelters, he also contends with his own fragile mental state — a silent war that mirrors the turmoil of his students.

Parallel to Steve’s journey, the story introduces Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teen suspended between self-destruction and redemption. Haunted by his past and uncertain of his future, Shy’s path becomes a raw, emotional counterpoint to Steve’s — both men confronting the harsh realities of a world that demands strength yet offers little compassion.

The ensemble cast includes Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo, Emily Watson, Douggie McMeekin, Youssef Kerkour, Luke Ayres, Joshua J Parker, Araloyin Oshunremi, Tut Nyuot, Tom Moya, Ahmed Ismail, Joshua Barry, Archie Fisher, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Priyanga Burford, George Fouracres, Marcus Garvey, Ruby Ashbourne-Serkis, and Roger Allam.
