The Star Wars universe is littered with beings from all backgrounds, races and creeds, stretching from the darker realms out the Outer Rim to the bustling airways of Coruscant. Within these ever-expansive realms lie a wide variety of individuals, from the noble Jedi to bounty hunters and beyond, each serving up a unique and formidable character so revered by the fans.

But while we all know and love our Han Solos and our Luke Skywalkers, it pays to remember those background characters who solemnly contribute to fuse together this fascinating and expansive world we all know and love.

Bounty Hunters, sidekicks and musical maestros, Star Wars has them all and here are just a few who help to make this film series so memorable and among the greatest ever created.

The Cantina Band

Cantina BandPart of the magic of the Star Wars galaxy is the wide range of species showcased across the expansive galaxy, with some making their mark more than others. In the case of a group of Biths, their influence is felt through their love for music.

Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes, better known as the Cantina Band, solidified themselves in Star Wars lore with one of the catchiest and well-known tunes within John Williams’ vast catalogue of epic themes.

Very much icons in their own special way, the Cantina Band will rarely be forgotten when fans speak of Star Wars and they have received their own tributes in the form of appearances within Team America: World Police, Family Guy and others.

Admiral Ackbar

Admiral AckbarIT’S A TRAP!

Those three words will forever be cemented in the history archives of the Rebellion as Admiral Ackbar proclaimed in the last major battle between the Rebel fleet and the Empire’s Destroyer-heavy forces.

A fish-like Mon Calamari species, Ackbar not only created one of the most used Star Wars quotes in the galaxy but, lest we forget, actually led the Rebel Alliance in their final quest to quell the Empire threat.

Those who have watched that beautiful Comic-Con behind-the-scenes reel will have surely seen a glimpse of Ackbar, meaning we could be experiencing yet another trap in JJ Abrams’ forthcoming film.

Nien Nunb

Nien nunbAs co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon alongside Lando Calrissian, Sullustan Nien Nunb instantly stepped into the ranks of Star Wars’ greatest background characters. Helping to guide the Rebel Alliance to ultimate victory, Nunb proved that he was so much more than just a fill-in for Chewbacca.

While we are still trying to work out exactly what his dialogue is translated to, it’s clear this is one of the best pilots in the galaxy and, if you are familiar with further Star Wars lore, will be returning as a pilot within the Resistance.

NEXT: Like a bossk…
