The cast of CBS All Access’s new Star Trek show is coming together nicely. Though the new sci-fi series lost its showrunner Bryan Fuller recently Star Trek Discovery is moving ahead with all speed. Today we have new details on three actors who are joining the cast in important roles…as Klingons.

Michelle Yeoh was recently confirmed as Captain Georgiou, the Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou, and she will be joined by Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp, both as Starfleet officers. Jones, who will be familiar to many from his behind-the-prosthetics performances in Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, will play Lt. Saru as a new alien species to the Star Trek universe. Rapp will play Lt. Stamets, a character described as an astromycologist in the series.

Deadline reported today that the other side of the fence is being populated with the casting of three actors in prominent antagonist roles. Given that the series intends to focus their attention of a core team of Klingons, rather than the Special Guest actor revolving door of the past, we’re certain to see a more nuanced approach to the conflict.

Lining up for duty are Penny Dreadful’s Shazad Latif as Kol, a high ranking Klingon officer. Chris Obi, who recently appeared in Roots and has a part in Fuller’s American Gods adaptation, has been cast as Kol’s mentor, and Klingon peacebroker T’Kuvma.

Mary Chieffo rounds out the new cast as L’Rell, who is said to be in command of Kol’s ship, perhaps as a Number One?

Despite a brief appearance in J. J. Abrams Star Trek Into Darkness the Klingons will not be the same in this new show as they were in the rebooted movie universe. Star Trek Discovery takes place in the world of Shatner’s Kirk, a decade before the events of the original series.
