The Mummy reboot is Universal’s first step (well, second if you include the already forgotten about Dracula Untold) in building a shared monster movie universe which will incorporate properties like Van Helsing, The Wolfman, and The Invisible Man over the next few years.
Today, the first set photos of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond’s Sofia Boutella have surfaced, and they offer up a very interesting look at this new take on The Mummy. We’ve known for a while now that the titular villain would be female, and the recently released synopsis for the Alex Kurtzman helmed reboot sheds further light on why.
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Boutella) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
Tom Cruise also stars in The Mummy alongside Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, and Russell Crowe. The movie is currently set to be released on Jun 9th, next year.
