This Monday 26th January sees the DVD and Blu-ray release of Think Like a Man Too. This sequel to 2012’s Think Like a Man sees the couples return to Las Vegas for a wedding, but, predictably, hilarity ensues.
There have been numerous movies celebrating Nevada’s Disneyland for adults throughout the years, but very few have transcended the genre to become truly memorable films in their own right.
There are, however, a handful of Las Vegas movies that endure as classics. Here are six of the best.
William H. Macy, one of cinema’s great character actors, takes on a rare leading role in this downbeat 2003 drama from Wayne Kramer. This criminally unseen gem sees Macy’s downtrodden Bernie, one of life’s losers, working for tough casino boss Shelly, played with typical menace by Alec Baldwin. Macy is a ‘cooler’, someone whose luck is so bad, just his mere presence at a table is enough to turn players’ luck south.
Macy’s luck looks to be improving, however, when he falls in love. He finds himself, however, struggling to break free of Baldwin’s vice-like grip. Macy is typically stellar, and his sympathetic portrayal draws the audience helplessly in, making the drama genuinely tense throughout.
The Cooler represents a side of Vegas we hope to never see, and tend to believe no longer exists. The seedy, vengeful casino boss, and the down on their luck gamblers who stand to lose a lot more than just their paycheck. It shows how the difference between glory and tragedy can sometimes come down to a single roll of the dice.
Think Like a Man Too is out on DVD from Monday the 26th of January.
