Universal’s shared monster movie universe got off to something of a rocky start with Dracula Untold, but their future plans continue to impress. According to Deadline, Man of Steel and The Water Diviner star Russell Crowe has joined the cast of The Mummy in a very interesting sounding role which they describe as being very similar to a Dr. Jekyll type character.

In fact, it sounds like he may in fact be THE Dr. Jekyll, as one of Variety’s reporters has revealed on Twitter that Crowe will be making a cameo here with the possibility of him returning down the line in either another of these movies or even a standalone piece.

For now, the cast of The Mummy is shaping up to be pretty damn fantastic though, with Tom Cruise taking on a leading role and Kingsman and Star Trek Beyond’s Sofia Boutella set to play a female version of the titular villain. Johnny Depp is also part of this monster movie universe as he was cast as The Invisible Man not too long ago, so it’s all rather exciting.

Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are developing this shared universe for the studio (the former is also directing The Mummy), but it having a future no doubt depends mostly on how well things pan out with both this and the other handful of confirmed releases on the way.

However, Universal are clearly somewhat confident in its chances of success as it was only a day or two ago that they confirmed that another of these monster movies is coming in 2019.
