Robert Pattinson Keen to Star in Jeff Buckley Biopic

5

Not sure if fans of Jeff Buckley will be rejoicing and praising “Hallelujah” when they learn of Twilight star Robert Pattinson’s plans.

Accordingly to the Daily Express, the actor is “obsessed” with nabbing the role of the late, great singer/songwriter in a forthcoming biopic, and the film’s producer Michelle Sy (Finding Neverland) reveals that she’s “met actors who are keen on the part, and Robert was one.” Buckley’s life would certainly suggest quite an interesting departure from that of the fictitious lovelorn vampire Edward in Summit’s phenomenally successful film franchise.

Born in California’s Orange County in 1966, Buckley emerged in New York City’s avant-garde club scene in the 1990’s as one of the most respected artists of his generation, acclaimed by audiences, critics, and fellow musicians alike. His life was cut tragically short when in 1997 (aged just 30) he died in a tragic drowning accident in Memphis. Rather ironically, his father Tim Buckley (another famed musician) passed away at the young age 28 in the mid-70’s from an accidental drug overdose.

Pattinson presumably feels that this role could provide him with some credibility following the Twilight films, and given that recent biopics have scored with the critics, at the box office and during awards season (Walk the Line and Ray are just  two recent examples) this could be a shrewd move for the actor.

  1. I think Rob would be great at Jeff Buckley, and I am a fan of both Rob and Jeff Buckley.

Rob has the talent – I thought he was excellent in Remember Me. He also has the musical ability to pull this off with credibility, and the look. Jeff Buckley fans (some) seem to think Buckley was God and there are an elitist group whereby no one should touch Buckley’s music. I think this would be a great way to get Buckley’s music known and share in the joy. It diminishes nothing. I really hope Rob gets this role, if he does he will nail it.

  2. he is the perfect musical component of guitar and voice to portray jeff on screen. i miss jeff buckley and rob’s haunting voice and tone will make jeff come to life on screen and honor his music. rob has a remarkable quality of sound that will amaze true jeff buckley fans. no one will ever replace jeff but he should be known and honored by a new generation. i want my sons to know jeff buckley and the musical talent he possessed and what they missed growing up.

  4. Not surprising that they would make a biopic about Buckley, but it will be a real shame if they make it with someone like Pattinson in order to sell tickets. It would be really interesting to see whoever films the story take an unconventional approach, perhaps combining the stories of Tim and Jeff somehow, using talented unknowns.

It is a really tired genre overall; the only interesting biopic I have seen in some years was last year’s Gainsbourg

  5. I really hope he doesn’t play the part.
I think for someone as perfect as Jeff Buckley, they should not use such a commercialized actor no matter how talented he may be

James Franco or an unknown actor is a better fit and James Franco actually looks like him
