In the late 90s, Pokemon was one of the biggest crazes to ever sweep the globe as Nintendo shifted record numbers of video games featuring the now iconic creatures and those addictive playing cards inevitably sold out almost the same second new waves hit stores.

One thing which has always been surprising is that despite all of the animated movies and TV shows, there has never been any real sort of attempt made to launch a live-action franchise.

Well, that now looks set to change as Legendary Entertainment are aggressively pursuing the Pokemon property, attempting in the process to fend off the likes of Warner Bros. and Sony.

Things may not work out too well for them however as historic tensions between China and Japan could put a halt on Legendary (who are owned by China’s Dalian Wanda Group) being able to have any sort of involvement with the property. Stranger things have happened though, so it’s going to be very interesting to see where this Pokemon movie ends up.

It’s still early days of course, so there’s no word on what direction the franchise will be taken in. There’s a ton of potential here regardless, and while the Pokemon video games still sell well, this movie could very well once again have us all collecting those trading cards.
