Groundhog Day 2: It’s Happening Again (And Again)
Groundhog Day is one of the greatest romantic comedies ever made, transcending the supposed limitations of the genre, to simply become known as a sheer masterpiece of modern cinema. So, while a sequel may seem almost blasphemous, it would be fascinating to catch up with Bill Murray’s Phil, and see how he copes when he has to go through the whole ordeal all over again.
Except now he has the girl, it would play out in a rather different way, as instead of falling in love every day over, discovering new ways to lure in the beautiful Andie MacDowell – now, 20 years have passed. Their marriage is crumbling, the kids are a nightmare and life has entered into an irreversible bout of tedium. And every day, Phil wakes up, hears some terrible, twee acoustic number by Ed Sheeran on the radio, and then follows a horribly familiar routine, where he leaves the house, gets the subway during rush hour, and goes to a job he detests, with people he can’t stand.
Then he has to do that every, single day. The twist is, it’s not even Groundhog Day, it’s just his terrible, mundane life. Note to prospective producers: probably won’t be a comedy.
