The rise of Instagram and the ubiquity of smartphones (i or otherwise) means that today we’re all carrying around powerful cameras in our pockets. The millions of pictures of bowls of cereal and city sunsets shot through vintage filters and uploaded daily shows the hold these devices have over us. The problem is how to stand out from the others. If you want to make the most of the camera you carry with you every day then we may have the answer for you.

Always keen to explore the possibilities The Guardian will be including a free 84 page photography guide with their Saturday edition on the 17th of November. Over the years The Guardian have produced these masterclass editions on a range of topics, with their guide to making your own film being a highlight, taking into consideration the latest (at the time) video cameraphones which were just starting to be able to produce HD video.

The guide features contributions from Roger Tooth, focusing on understanding your camera and being able to get the best out of it, Dan Chung will make recommendations on the kit you’ll be using but whatever you’ve got your hands on this guide encourages you to contribute yourself with reader assignments as you go.

You can pick up your copy on the 17th  with this Saturday’s Guardian.
