Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to be released next month, with the as yet untitled Han Solo following in 2018. Chances are that Boba Fett will come next after that, but as exciting as all of those may sound, why on Earth hasn’t Ewan McGregor been signed up to star in an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff? That’s a question many fans have asked, but an answer may have been revealed!

During a recent podcast appearance, Entertainment Weekly reporter Anthony Breznican was asked about a solo adventure for the Jedi Knight, and his response may have shed some light on why Lucasfilm is holding off on it. “I have heard rumors that the one reason they haven’t moved sooner on Obi-Wan is that they’re not done with Obi-Wan quite yet in the Saga films. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see an Obi-Wan thing happen beyond Episode IX.”

That’s very interesting indeed, and with McGregor already reprising the role (albeit extremely briefly) in Star Wars: The Force Awakens last year, it wouldn’t be at all surprising for Obi-Wan Kenobi to once again factor into the current trilogy somewhere down the line.

In what form? Well, many fans believe that Obi-Wan is related to either Rey or Finn, so if some sort of familial tie was revealed in Episode VIII or IX, it would make sense for a future Anthology movie to delve into that particular aspect of the hero’s life before A New Hope.
