It is a little difficult to see past the slightly twee quality of the trailer for The Big Year, which sees Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson joining together to spend a year doing what they always dreamed of doing. That’s not to say that is necessarily a bad thing, as with comic movie adaptations, not everything has to go darker and grittier. Comedies can be light-hearted and life-affirming, they don’t have to be edgy and daring. Just funny.

Will it be funny? Well, there seem to be a few chuckles to be had here, but the obvious suspicion that the best material is on show in the trailer raises a few concerns about the quality of the rest of the film. Certainly the intro from the stars brings a smile to the face. Let’s be gracious and give it the benefit of the doubt. Enjoy the trailer and new poster below. The film hits us in the face on 11th November 2011 (14th October in the good old USofA).

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
