Bobcat Goldthwait may not seem like the most likely candidate for a cutting satire on the state of contemporary America, given that many will only remember him for his nigh-on incomprehensible work as Zed in the Police Academy films. But, he has moved on since then and recently gave us the interesting and relatively unheralded “World’s Greatest Dad”, which Adam Lowes of this parish seems to have admired.

From this trailer at least, God Bless America seems to be in a similarly dark vein, as the principals quite literally cut a swathe through superficial TV, melodramatic confessionals and nonsense fly on the wall docu-soaps. Frankly, seeing the US of A being dissected by one of its own is always more satisfying than an outsider attempting it; it just seems to have more credibility this way.

The plot sees middle-aged Frank discover he is terminally ill and then go on a rampage with a teenage girl. Hardly laugh-inducing stuff on that synopsis, but then dark comedy has always been a delicate balance and as ever the success of the film will turn on how well Goldthwait can tread that fine line.

This is NSFW, unless you work somewhere where everyone can gather round to watch something violent and sweary.

Collider gave us this one.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
