District 9 and Chappie director, Neill Blomkamp has unleashed a teaser for his upcoming shorts series Oats Volume 1 from his own venture which looks, quite frankly, so pretty damn awesome these series of shorts could start a new wave of interest across wider audiences.

The short films are planned for a streaming only release on PC game distribution service, Steam and will come at a price. Blomkamp’s new project Oats Studios is behind the thrilling new set of shorts which was created to deliver experimental short films. Oats Studios will actively encourage budding filmmakers to make shorts of their own, with assets from Volume 1 – 3D models, footage, music and so on – planned to appear on Steam for “a nominal price.”

The teaser is crammed full with a variety of alien’s and zombie type beings, Beginning with a shot of the Eiffel Tower covered in what looks like dead foliage “We were once mankind, We were humanity” is elegantly stated by the narrator before quickly changing vision with an Alien patrolling humans on their knees and the narrator revealing “They came here to exterminate us” before revealing what could be crossovers into the worlds of movie franchises that have come before. Dakota Fanning seems to pop up bearing a gun which is too big for her to carry as she goes up against the Aliens, and we are sure Sigourney Weaver makes a little cameo in there as well.

Oats Volume 1

If Blomkamp’s past short films are anything to go by, such as his six-minute short, Alive in Joburg which explores themes of apartheid and is noted for its visual effects as well as its documentary-style imagery which later went on to be adapted into the full length feature District 9 by expanding the themes and elements from the short, this could well pave the way for these shorts to take the same road.
