Directed by Nadia Conners (The 11th Hour, Tyrant) and produced by Rosie Fellner, Carlos Cuscó and Ari Taboada, The Uninvited stars Elizabeth Reaser (Twilight, The Handmaid’s Tale), Walton Goggins (The White Lotus, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight, Justified), Pedro Pascal (The Mandelorian, Gladiator II, The Last of Us, Narcos, Game of Thrones), Lois Smith (Lady Bird, Minority Report, Marjorie Prime, Five Easy Pieces) and Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat, Scoop).
This funny yet poignant story follows Rose (Reaser), a one-time actress who has transitioned to life as a stay-at-home mother. As she gets her house ready for a work party her husband (Goggins) is hosting, an older woman named Helen (Smith) shows up, insisting she’s come back to her house. This sudden arrival, along with other tricky people from both her past and present, turns the evening into a chaotic one. Through the night’s events, Rose is compelled to face her own self-doubts and think deeply about her experiences as a woman. The film playfully pokes fun at Hollywood’s obsession with beauty while also celebrating the multifaceted nature of being a woman. It delves into ideas around motherhood and finding oneself in the Los Angeles setting.
We spoke to director Nadia Conners about her film and the reason beihind wanting to make such a film. Although inosired by her life in Hollywood, Connor, who is married to actor Walton Goggins, made it clear from the offset that the story is in no way aiutobiograpohical. The writer/director also spoke about the superfirciality of livivng in a world where beauty and youth are seen as an imprtant comodity and where ageing is regraded as something to be ashamed of.
Connors, who is from an Egyptian background, also spoke about the diffirence in the way old people are treated in western societies as opposed as thise in middle-eastern cultures. We also touched upon working with her husband on the film and her experience being with him in Thailand on set of The White Lotus.
