It has been announced that the movie rights for the character of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple have been secured by Disney who are planning a new big screen mystery for the famous sleuth.

Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost is the man Disney have taken on to write the screenplay and according to THR it will eschew the period setting and go for a contemporary version of the spiky spinster, a move which worked well for the BBC’s recent reworking of the Sherlock Holmes character.

It’ll be odd to see the aging detective in a world of mobile phones and Youtube superstars, particularly as here in the UK we’re fed a pretty constant diet of period Marple on TV, but Frost’s should make for a very interesting spin on Christie’s character.

Surely I can’t be the only one who’s hoping for the obligatory ineffectual local police sergeant to carry a dictaphone and talk about the damn fine battenberg slices?
