She had been rumoured to be the top contender, but it has now been confirmed that Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead helmer Michelle MacLaren will direct and develop Wonder Woman for Warner Bros.

Gal Gadot (Fast and Furious 6) is playing the character and will bring her to the big screen for the first time in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The Wonder Woman is set to be released on June 23rd, 2017.

According to the report, MacLaren is set to work with the movie’s writers (who we don’t actually know the names of at this point in time) to put the script together and will then obviously direct. Charles Roven, Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder are all producing, and each of them are well versed in the DC movie universe.

MacLaren first met with the studio back in August, but they looked at a number of other female directors after talks cooled. They included Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland).

This is set to be the first superhero movie directed by a woman and one of only a handful of big budget blockbusters to have a non-male filmmaker at the helm. Wonder Woman is obviously a big priority for Warner Bros., and they’re to have been keen on finding a female director from the very beginning.

MacLaren has made a name for herself in a number of TV shows, including HBO’s Game of Thrones.
