Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 marks the fourth collaboration between actor Michael Rooker and director James Gunn – and so when we sat down with the former, who reprises his role as Yondu in this eagerly anticipated sequel, we asked him about his time spent with one of the most promising filmmakers in the galaxy.

This sequels presents something of a more textured, character-driven endeavour, and Yondu’s journey is emblematic of this fact. Rooker explained to us about how great it is having such a nuanced character to work with, and whether he found it difficult at all connecting on such terms when in such an epic environment.

He also speaks about the make-up (he had to turn blue every single day) and the importance of the soundtrack – explaining that Gunn would allow the actors to listen to the tracks while shooting. He also speaks about perfecting his character’s defining whistle, and what it’s like being a part of the MCU – though with a role in The Walking Dead, it’s a fan pressure he’s rather used to coping with.
