2. The Goodfellas Steadicam
A sequence which manages to impress with its technical accomplishments, without feeling like it is showing off to audiences, this scene follows Henry Hill through the back entrance to the club, all the way up to a treasured spot right in front of the stage. It captures the excitement of all that Hill is experiencing, illustrates his increasing ascendancy and induces covetousness all at the same time.
We are being seduced just as much as Lorraine Bracco, Harry Hill’s power and importance demonstrated by as showy and effective a piece of camerawork as Scorsese has ever given us. Extended camera shots have cropped up since in everything from Snake Eyes to Children of Men, but this remains the high water mark of the technique.
