2. The Wrong Trousers – The┬áTrain Chase

The Wrong Trousers

It would be so easy for this to have wound up as one smart idea in search of a story on which to hang it. Instead, this second animated adventure for Wallace and Gromit provides layer upon layer of jokes, invention and wit.

A villainous penguin, bent on a daring jewellery heist, moves in with Wallace & Gromit and uses Gromit’s latest invention (remote controlled trousers) to get at a giant diamond. The climax sees Wallace, Gromit and the penguin chasing around the house on a toy train set.

The coup de grace is undoubtedly the moment when Gromit is at the front of the train and sees the track is running out, so picks up a box of track pieces and starts to lay them down just in time for the train to continue to run over them. Considering the whole thing is frame-by-frame plasticine models, the effectiveness of the sequence is nothing short of miraculous.

As an action scene it is breath-taking, hilarious and genius-level in its conception and execution.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
