After a 6-minute standing ovation at Cannes last year, Lorcan Finnegan’s The Surfer has landed at the Glasgow Film Festival 2025.

This psychological thriller starring Nicholas Cage and Julian McMahon is about toxic masculinity and a man’s descent into madness (Cage) after being humiliated in front of his son by a gang led by Scally (McMahon) at a local surf spot.

We sit down with its director, Lorcan, to talk about working with Nicholas Cage, stand-out performance from Nic Cassim and challenges of shooting in an idyllic setting.
